At this time of year your skin needs a new winter wardrobe to help protect and nourish. Nicola Bonn reveals the beauty products that do the job brilliantly

I love this time of year. There’s a chill in the air, long luxurious baths to be run and log fires to be lit. There’s also a sense of anticipation with Christmas around the corner. I thought I’d dedicate my November column to products that will make you feel cosy, warm and protected now that the weather is colder.

I have to start with my find of the month. If, like me you suffer from terribly rough and cracked hands at this time of year, then you are going to thank me for this. I recently came across La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Mains in my local chemist, and it is by far the best and most effective hand-cream that I have ever used. Having a six month old baby means that I am forever washing my hands and they were so cracked that they were bleeding in places. After just one application of this cream they felt soft and supple and started to heal. The moisturising effects lasted for hours and all signs of dryness had pretty much gone after three days. The best thing about this cream is the price. You can get it for £4.33 online at

Another saviour at this time of year is Lanolips Golden Ointment (£17.99 for 50g at Boots). This moisturising balm contains ultra pure medical grade lanolin as well as Manuka honey and Vitamin E. It can be used on all dry and problem skin areas but I use it as a lip-balm. It beats all the others hands down and will keep your lips looking plump and hydrated all winter long.

As far as protecting your face in the cold weather goes, I recommend Ren’s Vita Mineral Emollient Rescue Cream. It provides instant relief to dehydrated skin as well as protecting you from the elements. You only need a small amount and you will marvel at how comfortable your face feels. It costs £19 for 50ml and REN products are available at the Medusa Apothecary in Bridport.

Finally, if you’re after the ultimate candle for this time of year then it has to be the new NEOM Perfect Peace candle (available at John Lewis, Poole £45).

It contains pine, myrrh and lime peel and is guaranteed to make you feel warm, cosy and dare I say it, just a little bit Christmassy. The perfect accompaniment to a glass of port, sipped whilst snuggled under a warm blanket with the one you love.
