Make the most of the final days of summer this month by wandering around one of these glorious gardens

OPEN BY ARRANGEMENT

For gardening groups interested in autumnal inspiration, the following NGS venues are open by arrangement only over the next few months. More at ngs.org.uk.

BROOK VIEW CARE HOME

New to the National Garden Scheme (NGS) this year, this colourful garden is spread over two main areas, one warm and sunny and the other cooler and shadier. A fountain area serves as a gathering point on the sunny side, then a walk past the greenhouse leads to fruit and vegetable gardens. Produce is used by the kitchen, and residents help with the production of the bedding plants, all expertly managed by the gardener.

HOLWORTH FARMHOUSE

Enjoy beautiful unspoilt views from this unusual garden of extraordinary peace and tranquillity. Large vegetable garden, ponds, fish, water features, many unusual trees and shrubs.

OLD RECTORY

Wander through 4 acres of natural woodland, where steep paths lead to springs, streams and a natural swimming pool planted with native plants. HERONS MEAD

A half-acre plant lover's garden with late seasonal exuberant plants amongst swathes of tall grasses, wildlife pond and plants to attract bees, butterflies, as well as a tiny woodland and cacti.

Athelhampton House & Gardens near Dorchester is the venue for this Plant Heritage Dorset event, featuring independent local nurseries with a wide range of plants, local produce and interesting craft stalls. Open 10am-3pm.

Autumn Propagation Workshop with Thomas Stone

Propagating new plants from your existing favourites is enormously satisfying and can save a great deal of money at this workshop hosted by Sculpture by the Lakes, at Pallington near Dorchester, covering semi-ripe cuttings and sowing bi-annual plants and annuals, such as sweet peas for an early display the following year. AUTUMN PLANT FAIR AT MAPPERTON

Popular annual event featuring more than 30 specialist nurseries and garden-related stands offering a wide range of herbaceous plants, shrubs and gifts. Whilst you're there do explore the Italian sunken garden alongside a herbaceous, shaded and kitchen garden. Open 10am - 4pm.

ORCHID SHOW

Bournemouth Orchid Society's autumn show features potting demonstrations, plant clinics and exhibitors.

DEANS COURT

Explore 13 acres of peaceful, partly-wild garden in this ancient monastic setting close to Wimborne town centre. Mature specimen trees, Saxon fish pond, herb garden, orchard and apiary beside River Allen. First Soil Association accredited garden, within 18th century serpentine walls, uses a permaculture system and the produce is used in the café.
