With a wealth of independent retailers and its own dedicated Festive Shopping Day, Sherborne is the place to head for finding great Christmas gifts, writes Andy Greeves

Organised by volunteers of Sherborne Chamber of Trade and Commerce, Sherborne Festive Shopping Day on Sunday 3 December is part of the annual ‘Love a Local Christmas’ event. Cheap Street and Digby Road will be closed to traffic on the day and filled with street entertainment (including dancing from Hobos Morris and the Treacle Eaters), market stalls and carol singing (Sherborne Girls, Sherborne Boys, Sherborne Prep and Leweston Schools as well as the Sherborne Abbey Choir). Father Christmas will be in his Grotto outside the Post Office, with every little visitor receiving a gift (entry fee of £2).

One of the highlights of the Festive Shopping Day is the parade. Starting at the top of Cheap Street at 4pm it culminates with the illumination of the Christmas tree lights at the Conduit, ending just in time for you to join Sherborne Abbey’s Christingle Service at 5pm.

Not to be missed is the Sherborne Christmas Tree Festival in Cheap Street Church featuring 50 sponsored Christmas Trees which you can admire between 2–10 December (10am – 4.30pm). The final day features the Christmas Tree Festival Carol Service at 6.30pm.

In the run-up to Christmas Castle Gardens, on the outskirts of town, is staging Light Up A Life with Weldmar Hospicecare. Everyone is welcome to dedicate a light to the memory of a loved one on the garden’s tree at this event at 6.30pm on 29 November. Castle Gardens is also home to an award-winning Christmas display, definitely worth seeing at this most wonderful time of the year!

My Sherborne - Local resident and owner of A Head for PR Jane Adkins shares her favourite Christmas traditions

Walking down Cheap Street on a crisp December evening with all the little Christmas trees and their twinkling white lights jutting out from the mix of ancient and modern shop fronts always put me in the Christmas mood. A visit to the award-winning Castle Gardens Christmas Shop starts off the festive season for me. Then it’s off to the town centre, which comes alive at this time of year with concerts at our historic Abbey, our Festive Shopping Sunday (December 3) and the pretty Festival of Christmas Trees at Cheap Street Church. With its wealth of independent shops and artisan markets, I never have a problem finding special Christmas gifts in Sherborne!
