For many people the recent snow fall has caused great inconvenience, and the plummeting temperatures have proved to be most uncomfortable. However, for one Hampshire resident the wintery weather is manna from heaven. Sweeny Todd, a Snowy Owl, who lives at the Hawk Conservancy Trust in Andover, is loving the minus zero temperatures.

Curator, Andy Hinton, explains snowy owls are found in the northern hemisphere, places like the Arctic and Alaska, and can maintain their body temperature even when air temperatures reach -50oc. They have evolved perfectly to endure the cold. Sweeny Todd was bred at the Trust three years ago and is a really popular resident. Some of our southern hemisphere birds require heat lamps at this time of year, as they prefer much warmer temperatures, but Sweeny absolutely loves this snowy weather. Shes in her element.

As part of an education and conservation awareness programme, Sweeny Todd takes part in the flying demonstrations at the Trust and is also used on experience days, where people can get close to and handle the birds of prey.

Marketing Manager, Gale Gould, said Sweeny is a very popular character at the Trust. Much of it, I am sure, because she has such a close resemblance to Hedwig from the Harry Potter stories. She really enjoys flying at this time of year and visitors to the Trust can witness the skills and pure beauty of this owl when she flies.
