From a quirky secret garden to a plant lover’s paradise, these NGS venues offer some glorious late summer displays, and there are some garden masterclasses to inspire too

The Secret Garden and Serles House

Ingenious use of unusual plants complements the imaginative treasure trove of garden artworks at one of the most unexpected and creative gardens opening for the National Gardens Scheme. Then step in to a theatrical world of whimsical fantasy at Serles House. Homemade teas.

Western Gardens

This secluded and magical one acre garden, created over 40 years, captures the spirit of warmer climes. It offers enormous variety, with a Mediterranean courtyard, herbaceous borders and woodland garden. Lush foliage and vibrant flowers give year-round interest, enhanced by sculpture and topiary. Homemade teas.

Staddlestones

Explore this cottage garden with colour-themed borders and pleached limes. Cross over a chalk stream to a shady area with unusual plants and admire wire bird sculptures created by a local artist. Cream teas.

Herons Mead

Admire late-season exuberant planting amongst swathes of tall grasses in this half-acre plant lover’s garden. Also wildlife pond, woodland area, plants to attract bees and butterflies. Homemade teas.

Masterclasses

Wildlife Garden Planning & Design - 5–7 September

Visit some of Dorset’s best wildlife-friendly gardens and learn how to create your own at this Dorset Wildlife Trust event at The Kingcombe Centre. kingcombe.org or call 01300 320684.

Grass Masterclass - 14 September

Knoll Gardens are nationally recognised for their grasses, this masterclass covers everything from how to maintain grasses through to designing with them (2–4.30pm). Book online at knollgardens.co.uk.
