What’s on in Wimborne for Christmas 2016

There are plenty of festive events for all family, and at its heart are the traditional Christmas services at the Minster, writes Andy Greeves
Festive celebrations in Wimborne get underway on Saturday 26 November with the Christmas Lights Switch On in Wimborne Square. All the Fun of the Fair on 3rd and 4th December features rides, games and fun and there’s a performance of Jack and the Beanstalk at the Allendale Centre on Saturday 3 December at 6pm.
Now in its 38th year is Wimborne’s annual Save the Children Parade, which is on Saturday 1 December. The all-day event culminates in a festive parade through the town in the afternoon.
Saturday 17 December brings a raft of Christmas themed events throughout the town including the Wimborne Minster Chamber of Trade and Commerce Christmas Children’s Show at 10.30am at The Allendale Centre. The Shoppers’ Carol Service is at Wimborne Minster Church from 11am, while Little Landies at the Willow Walk between 11am-3pm will give children the opportunity to ride in mini Land Rovers! And after dark don’t miss a stunning Christmas Lumiere by Radio Wimborne on the walls of the Minster.
The Tivoli Theatre is hosting the pantomime Sleeping Beauty between December 16 and January 2, 2017 and the Allendale Centre hosts a Christmas Party at 7pm on Saturday 10 December. Children can visit Santa’s Grotto at Angel’s Café in East Street on the 17th and 19-24 December, details of booking are available on the ‘Wimborne Minster BID’ Facebook Page.
Carols in the Corn Market (6pm, Friday 23rd December) is a Wimborne tradition bringing hundreds of people together to sing carols. While at the Minster there is a busy calendar of events including an Advent Candlelight Service on Sunday 27th November, Midnight Eucharist at 11.30pm on Christmas Eve and Holy Communion at 8am on Christmas Day.

My Wimborne Christmas - Ian Faulkner, Chair of Wimborne BID
Wimborne is delightful all year round, but at Christmas it becomes magical with lights in the square, across the streets and on the trees outside the shops. The Lights Switch On (26 November) always features a ‘mystery celebrity’ switching them on in the square at 4.30pm. I also enjoy the Save the Children Parade (10 December) and Carols in the Corn Market (23 December). Just wandering around the town at this time of year is always an absolute joy.
Wimborne as a great range of places to eat and drink, and over the Christmas period the Alpine Bar is in the square from the 13th December until Christmas Eve. The Chamber, the Town Council and the BID work together getting the town ready for Christmas so, in the run-up, I will be twirling lights on Christmas Trees, and standing at the bottom of ladders whilst they are put up!
Christmas Day itself is all about family, and my daughters and their husbands will be joining us over the festive break, which I am very much looking forward to.
