With the promise of showstopping Christmas lights, a real outdoor ice rink and Santas chasing a pudding on the beach, this seaside town is gearing up for a lot of festive fun and games this year

Lighting up for Christmas

Like untying a bow on a giant present, Weymouth’s BIG Christmas gets underway on Saturday 3 December with the BIG Christmas Lighting-Up Ceremony, and this year’s lights are going to be very special. Weymouth recently won £10,000 worth of Christmas lights at the national Revive & Thrive conference, competing against 12 other towns for the top prize. Blachere Illuminations, the company who provided the prize, have been working with Weymouth BID to make the most of the win which will bring a new level of light and Christmas spirit to the town.

Christmas entertainment starts at 2pm including ice skating displays on the outdoor rink, performances from local dance groups and music from local choirs. Wave at Santa and his parade as he goes to his Grotto located in Cineworld. Santa and his real reindeer will be ready to hear your Christmas wishes from 5pm (book tickets online).

Don’t miss the BIG Christmas Light Switch-On at 6pm with the Mayor of Weymouth & Portland, Richard Kosier as well as the cast of this year’s pantomime Jack & the Beanstalk.

Christmas Day dip

Weymouth and Portland Lions invite you to get sponsored for this daring annual fundraising swim across the harbour on Christmas Day morning and work up an appetite for your Christmas lunch! Over 150 brave souls took part last year. Dive in at 11am.

Christmas shopping

Saturday 3 December is also a celebration of small businesses with the national campaign, Small Business Saturday, and to celebrate this there is FREE parking in council car parks from noon.

Weymouth has a range of big name high street stores including Pandora, Marks & Spencer and Debenhams in St Thomas Street and St Mary Street. Looking for something different? You will find a fabulous range of independent boutiques and shops in St Alban Street and lower St Mary Street for those seeking an extra special gift.

Fancy dress revelry

Weymouth’s BIG New Year Fancy Dress party is legendary. Join 20,000 revellers in Britain’s biggest New Year’s Eve Fancy Dress Party throughout the town centre and harbour side and welcome in 2017.

It’s panto time!

Enjoy the fabulous family panto experience of Jack & the Beanstalk featuring stunning scenery, gorgeous costumes, incredible Special Effects and a whole host of hilarious characters including the wonderful Lee Redwood as Dame Trott. Runs 10 December – 1 January at Weymouth Pavilio

Chase the pudding!

Don’t miss the ever-popular 5k Chase the Pudding Santa Dash on 18th December. This Weymouth tradition sees hundreds of locals dressed up as Santa. They all run along Weymouth beach in pursuit of someone dressed up as a Christmas pudding! The madness commences at 11am.

Get your skates on!

Enjoy a session on Weymouth’s real outdoor ice rink open from 2nd December until 2nd January 2017. Located in New Bond Street in Weymouth town centre, this is the only real ice rink for over 25 miles. Weymouth’s Christmas Rink is the perfect way to get yourself and your family in the spirit of Christmas. There will be a special Five-Pound Friday launch offer on Friday 2nd December where you can skate for 45 minutes for only £5! It is recommended that you pre-book online as tickets for popular days get sold quickly. The first skating session starts at 11.30am each day and the last session starts at 4.45pm Mon-Thur, 7.45pm Fri-Sat and 4pm Sundays – so you can even skate under the stars.
