Helen Stiles picks out some locally made natural and ethical beauty products to pop in your Christmas stocking

A gift box to inspire

The Owl & the Apothecary was started earlier this year by Katy Theakston, who moved from East London to rural West Dorset. Her beautiful handcraft luxury gift boxes, in elegant dove grey and gold, are filled with natural bath oils, rich body butters and aromatic candles (each with a ritual attached to spark thought), and are inspired by the British countryside and night sky. There are four to choose from: The Intrepid Fox Box - for those seeking change and adventure; The Beautiful Wild Rabbit Box - for those embarking on motherhood; The Thoughtful Night Sky Box - for those seeking truth and freedom and The Gentle White Hart Box - for those in need of peace and clemency.

The products inside are from Natural Health Beauty award-winner Mel Millis, locally based Make Skincare and London’s cool brand Skin & Tonic. I was very taken by The Intrepid Fox Box which is designed to inspire positive thoughts and actions, perfect for banishing those winter blues. It comes with a zingy aromatic candle, rejuvenating steam clean, refreshing body polish, a stimulating clear quartz stone and a rather dashing wild fox mask to dance a naked foxtrot under the starry night sky.

Prices range £65 and £85 for the gift boxes or from £25 for the candles. Buy online at owlapothecary.com or you can call 01308 538891.

A nourishing blend from Bridport

Oleo Bodycare products are handmade by professional aromatherapist, Olivia Chapman who uses pure essential oils, plant oils, floral waters, butters and herbal extracts in her range of 50 different products created in her Bridport workshop. I particularly like Oleo’s uplifting Geranium & Orange Body Lotion (£12 for 250ml) a truly fragrant moisturising experience. With biting winter winds assaulting my face during daily dog walks I would also ask Santa for a pot of their best-selling facial oil Replenishing Facial Moisturiser (£16.50 for 60g) which has a sublime aroma of rose and neroli essential oils. You can buy online at oleobodycare.co.uk or call 01308 427651.

Bring on the bath bombs

Lush Fresh Handmade Cosmetics always have fun stocking fillers. With its HQ and founders based in Poole, this ethically inspired company have branches in Bournemouth and Poole, or buy online at lush.co.uk.

I never say no to a Lush bath bomb! Shoot for the Stars bath bomb produces shimmering midnight blue water scented with Brazilian orange and bergamot oils £3.95.

Age-defying Frankincense

Neal’s Yard Remedies is renowned for its ethical and organic health and beauty range, and its HQ is in Dorset. If you are looking for a Christmas theme to your gifts then their award- winning Frankincense Collection, features a range of luxury age-defying treatments including the Frankincense Intense Eye Cream (£45). They also have a great range of boxed gift sets including a Men’s Organic Grooming Collection (£30) and a Beauty Sleep Organic Collection (£40).
