The Dorset Food, Drink & Farming Awards 2018 are open for nominations

Dorset Magazine Food, Drink & Farming Awards are back and we want you to nominate your local heroes now

The Dorset Magazine Food, Drink & Farming Awards, to be held at The Italian Villa on 27 September, will champion the county’s local food and drink heroes and recognise the extraordinary contribution these businesses - great and small - contribute to our local economy.

From butchers, bakers, brewers and chefs to independent retailers and food eco champions - we want you to nominate your favourites. Does you local tea shop offer the best cream tea for miles? Is there a locally produced drink that you are proudly serving at your dinner parties?

This year we are excited to introduce two new awards: Eco Champion of the Year and Entrepreneur of the Year. Read on to find out the nomination criteria for these exciting new categories.

There has never been a better time to support your local food and drink scene, so please nominate those people, products and business which are helping to put Dorset on the map.

Nominate your food, drink and farming heroes online at our awards website before Monday 30 July 2018

Headline sponsor: Dorset Food & Drink

Event partners: Beales Gourmet and Fiona Penny at Sunflowers

Sponsored by Clipper Tea

We recognise that tea shops and coffee shops are an integral part of the Dorset food and drink scene and we’d like to know your favourites. Who makes the best tea or coffee? Is it tea bags or leaves? Is the coffee freshly ground? Who serves the nicest cakes or the best scones? Is the jam homemade and are the sandwiches freshly cut? We’re looking forward to hearing about your favourites.

Sponsored by Saffery Champness

This is your opportunity to nominate your favourite drink – made by a Dorset producer, retailer or manufacturer. Consider the innovativeness of the item and whether this was achieved without compromising on its taste, indulgence and value for money.

Sponsored by Fiona Penny at Sunflowers

We want to hear about your favourite deli, baker, butcher or food retailer and why you think they deserve this accolade. Look out for establishments that supply products produced and grown here in Dorset. This retailer must have a genuine passion for our local food scene and a dedication to what it means for the local community.

Sponsored by Porter Dodson

This category aims to celebrate our local producers that play such a vital role in the food community. The winner of this category will be an individual or company that consistently provides reliable, quality products to customers and who is always wanting to go further. This category celebrates the individual or company who has made the most impact on the food and drink community.

Sponsored by Westchem

The winner of this category will be the restaurant that – in the judges’ opinion – offers the best dining experience. It’s not just that it serves the most delicious and well-cooked food. Everything from the décor, the service, the food, the wine list and those little finishing touches that make dining such a pleasure, will be judged for this prestigious award.

Sponsored by FLAG

This category aims to celebrate the wonderful local seafood landed in the county. We are looking for restaurants that go that extra mile to source their seafood locally and build a relationship with their supplier. Do they tell you about where they source their seafood from on the menu? Do they go out of their way to feature more unusual fish and shellfish landed locally. Are they supporters of sustainably caught fish? Do they showcase the freshly caught fish or shellfish in outstanding dishes?

Sponsored by Kingston Maurward

The chef of the year is someone who has devoted themselves to the cause of serving the best possible food. Technical ability, use of seasonal ingredients, presentation of the food and understanding of how flavours work together, these are some of the things the chefs nominated will be judged on. This category pits the finest Michelin-starred chefs against those working the local bistro.

Sponsored by Beales Gourmet

This award is designed to praise a local food or drink business for their excellent awareness of their customers’ needs. Vote for an establishment where nothing is too much trouble, where they are always willing to help and where attention to detail is key.

This category enables our numerous hotel restaurants to stand out from the crowd. We are looking for venues that offer a sublime dining experience with fantastic food, drink and superb service. Do you still go out of your way to eat there, even if you are not staying overnight?

Sponsored by Dave Cumber Vets

This award recognises and rewards those Dorset businesses and places that go the extra mile for dogs and their owners. This category is open to all pubs, restaurants, cafes and food retailer outlets.

Sponsored by Litter Free

Dorset magazine is excited to launch this new award together with Litter Free Coast & Sea and Litter Free Dorset. For this award we are looking for a local Food or Drink related business, who go the extra mile for the environment. Because of the sponsors, this year’s eco award is focusing on things businesses are doing to reduce plastic and single use item consumption, litter prevention and things businesses are doing to help prevent bathing water pollution. Perhaps they go above and beyond to encourage customers to reduce or recycle their waste; for example by stopping the use of straws or offering incentives to customers to have their takeaway coffee served in their own reusable cup. Perhaps they run clean up events or perhaps they have recently installed a fat trap. Is the business involved in any local community environmental projects or any other inspiring initiatives? It is these businesses that we want to hear about.

Sponsored by Dorset Growth Hub

Leading a small business is a notoriously difficult task that involves wearing many hats at once on the journey to securing a thriving operation. This new category introduced to the awards this year recognises the achievements of those that have mastered this balancing act. We are looking for individuals at the helm of a Dorset based food or drink related business who have achieved growth, understands its customer, has a vision to grow its workforce with effective leadership and is continually innovating to support future growth. We want to hear about the local businessmen and women you feel deserve this award.

Sponsored by Dorset Food & Drink

This category celebrates the individual who has made the most impact on Dorset’s food and drink community. This is someone who goes the extra mile to promote Dorset to a wider audience and is passionate about local produce throughout. Do you know someone who champions our vibrant local food scene? What sets them high above the rest in terms of achievement? How have they helped to lead the way and made a positive difference. Let us know who is a worthy winner of this prestigious title.

Sponsored by Hall & Woodhouse

Combining country pubs and dining pubs, the whole eating out experience needs to be taken into account in this category. Customer service, value for money and the quality of the food should all be accounted for. How well does the establishment use and name local suppliers and seasonal produce? Are the employees friendly, even if it isn’t your local? Are there local ales, juices and wines available to purchase and if so are they proudly on display?
